The Prison Writings of Ramsey Muniz

I thank my husband, Ramsey for bringing my father into the life of our family on El Dia de los Muertos – a day in which we remember our spiritual family members with love in our hearts. The time has come for our freedom and for reuniting our families. — Irma Muniz

This day of spiritual celebration has become a day of freedom in our hearts and souls like never before. Since becoming a part of this world, it has been our belief that our spirits continue to live. We pray to them and obtain the spiritual blessing from God and all spirits who are in heaven.

Just as we are returning to our God-given nature through our cultura and history, we are also returning to our power of spirituality like never before. We are survivors, and the reason for this lies in our spiritual beliefs that are a part of us and will always be.

God has blessed me with strength and profound spiritual and cultural power to overcome the confinement and great suffering for last 19 years of my life for the sake of my family. Our time has come, and it is written that it would only come through injustice, grief, and suffering.

In my heart and soul I can feel the rising of our sixth sun like never before in my life. On El Dia de los Muertos I celebrate the spiritual love of those who are in heaven and reside in our hearts, leading us to the enlightenment of freedom.

  • Raul G. Garcia Responds to Express-News Column on Ramsey Muniz

Note: The following letter by Raul G. Garcia to the Editor of the San Antonio Express-News has not yet been published there.–gm

    Dear Editor:

I would like to offer a rebuttal to columnist Scott Stroud who recently wrote a piece (Express News, September 1, 2011) on former La Raza Unida Party candidate for governor of Texas, Ramsey Muñiz. Apparently Mr. Stroud got the “facts” from the wrong people who appear to harbor agendas that pass for truth. No wonder the Express News has started to fall apart in the last two weeks, with the departure of two editors, two staff members, and Stroud himself who is high tailing it to Tennessee. This is what happens to a newspaper when gossip and rumor replace the truth.

Stroud has maliciously done a disservice to the Muñiz family by implying that Muñiz himself harbors no hope of parole. The truth of the matter is that if there is anything that drives Ramsey, family, and friends it is the hope that one day he will be free. It is this hope which will destroy even the chains of a life sentence, for this is what Ramsey has suffered in the last 18 years. Neither Stroud, nor his misguided informants have an inkling of what it means to survive in the cages of America, so it’s easy for him to dispel the importance and value of hope which resides in the heart of the Muñiz family.

Stroud, who suffers from a lack of knowledge regarding appeals cases in judicial history, points out that Muñiz has no chance of being set free. The same was said of Nelson Mandela who was a prisoner for 27 years for his struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The voices of defeat said the same thing about Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi, recently released after 14 years of imprisonment for her leadership in the Democracy Movement in Myanmar (what used to be Burma).

In the last few years we have witnessed in the United States a number of prisoners released after being falsely accused for a deed they did not commit. The U.S. judicial system does have its own flaws, as acknowledged by former Supreme Court Justices Harry Blackmun and Sandra Day O’Connor, especially with regard to the death penalty. According to a study by professor Hugo Badau from Tufts University and Michael Radelet of Florida State University, there have been 28 innocent individuals executed in the country before 1973.

Another study that came out in 2001 conducted by a group of Columbia University law professors, led by professor James Liebman, showed that out of 5,400 death penalty appeals cases, there were errors in 3,600 of them. This was a study that included a 22 year period between 1973-1995. These were death row appeals cases representing 34 states. Some of the prisoners were exonerated from death row, and others got reduced sentences. The point is that the judicial system is not perfect, and it has also erred in matters other than life and death.

Muñiz has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, a sentence that is basically a death sentence, yet, he’s never blown up a federal building, nor has he murdered, lynched, raped, or exploited the financial life savings of working people. On the contrary, Ramsey gave his life for his people, for the poor, and in the process helped others become professionals in their own field.

The Houston Chronicle just recently (October 5, 2011) reported how law abiding citizens have been deceived or tricked into transporting drugs without their knowing it. The report states that prosecutors and a federal judge have conceded that law abiding people have been used in this way and are now being set free after a review of their case. Can columnist Scott Stroud prove that no one else planted cocaine in the car Muñiz drove, a car that did not belong to him? So who is hurting Ramsey Muñiz’s case? The weaklings who want him to admit guilt, and the media which acts as judge, jury, and prosecutor.

The time has come for all lovers of justice to rally behind Ramsey Muñiz and his family. The bashing of our people through the media should remind us of the past, of the way our Chicano brothers and sisters were likewise treated by a reactionary mentality which once again is overtaking America. Our heroes and heroines through history did not teach us to be vengeful, but to be as compassionate as possible, and never to lose our sense of justice.

Let us embrace our brothers and sisters who sometimes, because of circumstances, need us more than ever. Ramsey Muñiz still carries with him the spirit of La Raza, a spirit full of courage and spiritual hope, a spirit which still battles, from the dark dungeons of America, those who have succumbed to greed and power. It is this spirit of his freedom that should unite us in the outside, for THE TIME IS NOW.

    –Raul G. Garcia

Note: Raul Garcia and Ramsey Muñiz attended Baylor University at the same time. Raul went on to teach philosophy at the university level and Ramsey attended Baylor School of Law. In his article above, Raul Garcia responds to a recent article printed in the San Antonio Express-News on September 1, 2011. It was written by an employee, Scott Stroud, who mocks the suffering of Ramsey Muñiz and his family. Stroud expresses hateful sentiments about a man who fights for his freedom after 18 years of wrongful incarceration. His carefully chosen words reflect a total lack of respect toward Ramsey Muniz, his family, and many others who suffer greatly and face a death sentence -life without parole. — Irma Muniz

  • Cruel and Unusual: After 18 Years, Must Ramsey Muniz also Die in Prison?

An email from Ramsey and Irma Muniz:

    Dear Friends:

Ramsey was sentenced to a death sentence but it is called “life sentence without parole.” Legally, he received a death sentence. The only way that he will ever be released from the prisons is in a coffin.

The freedom that we seek from the Federal Bureau of Prisons should be immediately granted, because Ramsey has been wrongfully imprisoned and then given a sentence — life without parole.

Through Ramsey’s incarceration for the last 18 years, the US government has violated the 8th Amendment (cruel and unusual punishment), 5th Amendment (due process of the law), and 14th Amendment (equal protection under the law).

They have already taken 18 years of Ramsey’s life, which will never be returned or replaced in his heart and soul. Many are in total amazement that he has not lost his mind and sanity. They wonder how it is that in spite of his cruel confinement, he continues to be the man that he is, refusing to give up his struggle for freedom.

We ask how much more must Ramsey continue to suffer! There was no violence involved in his case. There were no weapons involved. There is a strong issue of innocence, yet he faces life a death sentence everyday of his life.

We ask where there is justice in his life. Where is the justice that America speaks about? Where there justice for his family that continues to suffer as he does?

We demand justice not tomorrow, not next week, nor next month, but now. We demand freedom now! We ask God to give us the will power and the assistance of humanity in seeking freedom and justice now!

Thank you for anything that you can do to help. Next week we will launch a letter writing campaign that will go through December 13, 2012 – Ramsey’s birthday. Details will be provided!

Please prepare for this by researching the name and address of your senator and congressman. Keep the addresses written so that you can locate them easily. Our senators and congressmen will hear from us regularly, and we will all send our letters at the same time – on or before December 13th of each month!

    With love,
    Ramsey & Irma Muniz

  • Ramsey Muniz: Tears for an Execution

As I communicate with you it is very difficult to hold back my tears. They just announced on CNN that Troy Davis will be executed. I will begin my fasting this very minute and I will be outside all day and in the evening praying for his soul asking that he continue to be strong and never ever give up his hope and love for justice and God.

I know that deep in my heart there are messages from God even in the taking of Troy, who will be in heaven seeking the means of providing justice and love to those who find themselves imprisoned as long as we have.

There was a profound reason for all the powerful spiritual dreams that I had last night and the presence of heavenly spirits who
embraced me various times, as if they knew that I would feel the pain and suffering of Troy Davis, his family, and those who are close to his heart.

I know that the spirits will be with me and they will give me such strength and will to exist that I will even become a most profound individual like never before in my entire life. Yes, my heart is broken because I have felt this pain and suffering that Mr. Davis has endured.

In reality, a death sentence is actually one in which everyday one does not know if he will ever be free to live and love like the rest of humanity on this earth. What an injustice against one’s life and heart!

I thank God for the tears and feelings that come from my heart, because this only indicates that they have not taken the most precious gifts of all, which are love and freedom. Those are the words of my father and they shall live with me forever.

Pray for the soul of Troy Davis and that one day justice will eventually come into the hearts of America. Please be in prayer with me.

    Amor,
    Ramsey

  • Ramsey Muniz: El Diez y Seis de Septiembre

Many of our forefathers sacrificed their lives for our sake. Knowing this, we remember el diez y seis de septiembre. It was told that on the morning of September 16th, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang church bells and called the indigenous Mexicanos of Dolores — a small town near Guanajuato, to proclaim Mexico’s independence from Spain. The “Grito de Dolores” or the cry from the small town of Dolores, initiated the the Mexican War of Independence.

Within a month, Hidalgo’s hordes swell to 100,000 – the largest army raised in Mexico since the Aztecs. They won their independence from the Spaniards against all odds!

We who sacrifice remember our forefathers reverently. We do not accept oppression. We do not accept negativity about ourselves. We do not listen to politicians who speak ill of our people and rich ancestry for the sake of votes.

El diez y seis de septiembre is a great part of history in which everyone should take pride, for we all pursue freedom, justice, and love. Feliz diez y seis de septiembre!

    Amor,
